Kids Pledge to Stay Off the Computer

November 07, 2007 - Football star Jerry Rice will join representatives from Microsoft and the PTA today to encourage families to set boundaries on childrens' media use. A group of Stuart-Hobson middle school students are pledging to spend less time in front of the T-V and the computer. Today, they'll get a visit from someone who knows a lot about getting off the couch...former NFL star Jerry Rice. National youth advocates are hoping the event will help kids balance entertainment with other activities, like exercise and studying. Microsoft Division President Robbie Bach says parents and kids need to talk about video games. Georgetown University Psychology Department Chair Sandra Calvert runs the Children's Digital Media Center. She says computers can sometimes improve kids' grades, especially in low-income households. And, she says, even some video games require you to get off the couch. If all goes well, one of those games will be showcased today. Jerry Rice is scheduled to dance to the popular game Dance Dance Revolution with a middle-school student in Stuart Hobson auditorium.

Democrats Take Virginia Senate

November 07, 2007 - Election Day 2007 is over, and Republicans and Democrats in Virginia are taking stock of their standing with the voters and how much power they'll have next year in Richmond. Democrats gathered in Tyson's Corner to celebrate what they're calling a strong campaign to gain seats in both the Senate and the House of Delegates. Delegate Brian Moran of Alexandria, himself reelected to his post, said the get-out-the-vote effort made the difference for Democrats this year. On a conference call with reporters, state Republican party chairman John Hager said the GOP remains a potent force in Virginia politics and will keep working on its pro-business agenda. Both sides are calling this election a good warm-up for Election Year 2008.

Two GW Students Face Student Judicial Action for Swastikas

November 07, 2007 - George Washington University's code of conduct does not specifically punish hate crimes, but the students could face that charge in District or Federal courts. Simply drawing racist symbols and words does not constitute a hate crime. The action has to be committed because of prejudice or bias. One of the students was a Jewish freshman who was caught drawing the swastikas on her own door. The other student was an upperclassman who drew swastikas and racial slurs in a different dorm. His name has not been released. School officials have planned town hall forums to discuss hate acts on campus and how to prevent them.

Navy's Fans Honor Team

November 07, 2007 - Navy football fans honored the academy’s team in downtown Annapolis after a win that snapped a long losing streak. A town crier dressed in a black three-cornered hat and a red colonial outfit started the rally near Annapolis’ City Dock to congratulate the midshipmen’s football team. Every time that Navy had played Notre Dame since 1963, Navy had lost. That all changed on Saturday when the midshipmen beat the Fighting Irish 46 to 44 in triple overtime. Navy’s place kicker, Midshipman Joey Bullen, kicked the game-tying field goal on Saturday. He says he’ll always remember the reception he and his teammates received when they returned to the Academy after the game.
