June 28, 2006 - A thin strip of National Park runs from bustling Georgetown to the green hills of Cumberland, Maryland - the C&O Canal. For 19th century Washington, the canal was a major method of transportation for coal and other supplies. Today, it's a one-hundred eighty-four mile bikepath and walkway.
John Urman, a local cyclist, traveled the entire path and created the award-winning documentary "On the Canal," that will be shown tonight on local television. WAMU's Gail Wein spoke with Urman at the first of the 184 miles of the canal, where the roar of jets from nearby National Airport mix with the call of canal boaters.
You can see John Urman's documentary "On the Canal" tonight at ten, on Maryland Public Television.
