The Working Poor - Health Insurance

Over the past few months, WAMU has examined issues affecting working poor families in the Washington area. Today, we look at health insurance. Many working poor parents lack coverage for their kids. To address this, Congress in the 1990s created a government sponsored health insurance program for the children of low-income families - and gave states the job of managing it. Virginia in recent years has enrolled thousands of kids in the program, and is nationally recognized for this effort, but Advocates for the working poor say more work lies ahead. WAMU's Sarah Hughes has more.

The Working Poor - Low Wage Workers

Each year, thousands of cases are reported in our region of immigrants in low-wage jobs who are either not paid in full - or not paid at all. The workers say employers take advantage of the fact that they're new to the country - and may not be here legally. Immigrant rights groups say Maryland, Virginia and DC could go a long way towards stopping such abuses by cracking down on these employers. WAMU's Lisa Nurnberger reports.
