With stepping as the muse, the explosive dancers of Step Afrika! bring to the stage a fresh look at contemporary culture, music and style. For Home Performance Series 2012 Step Afrika! presents, the world premiere of Nxt/Step: Remixing the Power and International Influence of Stepping with Hip Hop, Multimedia and Rhythm. Nxt/Step, explores the interconnectivity of trends from hip hop music and youth culture, to the explosion of multimedia throughout society.
A completely new production, Nxt/Step opens Thursday, June 21, 2012 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Northeast, featuring the Washington, DC debut of the incredible "Human Orchestra" Kenny Muhammad, recently seen on the History Channels’ hit show Stan Lee’s Superhuman. Nxt/Step weaves the stunning expertise of celebrated human vocal percussionist Kenny Muhammad, with stepping, engulfing the audience in beats, rhythms and sound once considered humanly impossible.
Created, musically in the format of an album, several dance works within Nxt/Step highlight emcees, a live DJ and Step Afrika!’s first-ever choreographed piece dedicated exclusively to DC’s own go-go music. Each piece resembles individual music tracks though differ in mood and style, the works are bound in a cohesive score of rhythms with remixes performed throughout the run of the show by guest artists.
