The British are Coming!
This week marks the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Bladensburg and the Burning of Washington during the War of 1812. Commemorate this historic occasion with events around the region, including festivals, walking tours, family events, lectures, tall ships and more.
On Saturday, August 23rd, join us in Bladensburg, Maryland for the "Undaunted Weekend" Commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of the Battle. The commemoration will include military demonstrations, period dancing and fireworks.
Then, on Sunday, August 24th, commemorate "A Capital in Flames" in Washington, DC, to honor the heroes of the Burning of Washington by the British and the subsequent 200 years of peace between the United States and Great Britain. Kick-off the day with a "Flee the British" 5K at the Historic Congressional Cemetery, followed by museum open houses, tours, dinners, walking tours and family fun all around the city.
The festivities continue Labor Day Weekend, when Alexandria, VA commemorates the surrender of the city to the British on Sunday, August 31st.
