Due to lack of affordable housing options, victims of domestic violence often have difficulty leaving their unsafe situation and many lack resources necessary to survive with their children outside the abusive environment. A local nonprofit organization is using a unique model to provide support systems for victims of domestic violence.

The Northern Virginia Coalition (NOVACO) helps homeless survivors of domestic abuse become healthy, secure, and self-sufficient through community collaboration to provide housing, education, childcare, housing and mentoring. NOVACO families are given the opportunity to pursue their goals with full or part-time schooling or job training, while their basic needs, such as housing, sustenance and childcare are taken care of by the program. In addition, NOVACO provides life skills empowerment classes on topics such as single parenting, resume and interview skills, car care, nutrition, health, financial literacy, budgeting, and first-time home ownership. The program partners with faith communities and civic organizations to provide sponsors, tutors and mentors, to work with families and help them achieve their education, career and financial goals. With the help of transitional housing and wrap around supportive services, NOVACO can offer survivors of domestic violence a safe place to re-start their lives.
