As one of the only advocacy organizations working to protect the coastal bays watershed, the Assateague Coastal Trust (ACT) is uniquely suited to combat these negative trends. Beginning with the successful fight to protect Assateague Island from development forty years ago, ACT has been protecting the natural resources of the Eastern Shore’s coastal region through advocacy, education and conservation. ACT’s Coastkeeper program is an on-the-water advocate for the coastal bays that works with coastal communities as well as local, state, and federal governments to identify threats to coastal bays and to support monitoring and restoration efforts. ACT provides hands-on environmental education through the Coast Kids program and has been working to build Berlin, Maryland into a model community for environmentally sustainable policy and practice through the Grow Berlin Green campaign. With the help of its volunteers and supporters, ACT is committed to keep working for clean water, open space, and controlled growth in the coastal bays region.
