Douglas combined angular cubist rhythms and a seductive Art Deco dynamism with traditional African and African American imagery to develop a radically new visual vocabulary. His forceful ideas and distinctive artistic forms made a lasting impact on American modernism.

Susan Earle, curator of European and American art at the Spencer Museum of Art, organized the exhibition; Virginia Mecklenburg, senior curator at the museum, is the coordinating curator.

Color as Field: American Painting, 1950-1975

Color as Field: American Painting, 1950–1975 is the first ever full-scale examination of the sources, meaning and impact of the Color Field movement. Color Field painting, which emerged in the United States in the 1950s, is characterized by pouring, staining, spraying or painting thinned paint onto raw canvas to create vast chromatic expanses. These works constitute one of the crowning achievements of postwar American abstract art. The exhibition includes 39 scaled paintings by such figures as Gene Davis, Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland and Jules Olitski. Color as Field presents an opportunity for viewers to comprehend the aims of these artists, view their finest works in close relation to each other and experience the visual magnetism of their pictorial handling of space and color.

Karen Wilkin, a specialist in twentieth-century modernism who has published widely on this period, is the curator of the exhibition; Joanna Marsh, The James Dicke Curator of Contemporary Art at the museum, is the coordinating curator in Washington.

Color as Field: American Painting, 1950–1975 is running now through May 26, 2008

The Honor of Your Company Is Requested: President Lincoln's Inaugural Ball

Travel back 143 years to the revelry of Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural ball. The exhibition, which relates the ball to the building and its history, features ephemera from the inaugural ball, including the invitation and menu as well as engravings illustrating the night's events and other artifacts. From pomp and politics to feasting and fights over food, this was one night destined for the history books. Charles Robertson, a specialist in American decorative arts, is the guest curator of the exhibition.

Inside the Artists' Studio

INSIDE THE ARTISTS' STUDIO: Renee Butler & Joe White

From their shared studio, artists Renee Butler and Joe White create work that provides a compelling sense of place. The unusual ambiguity of perspective and the relative flatness of pastel tonal areas in Joe White’s paintings show his relation to the Washington Color School. as well the origins of his contemporary representational compositions. Renee Butler’s installations, or “Resonant Environments,” involve a combination of light, translucent fabrics and sound to surround the viewer with sensory experiences of different kinds. Her stated goal is ‘‘to dissolve the boundaries between spectator and participant, inside and outside, abstraction and reality, time and space.”
