Seniors get help to stay in their homes
Seniors in the community too often face challenges alone. Their families may no longer live nearby, or can be overwhelmed with their own challenges. Resources and services are available, but taking advantage of such help is often complicated. Community organizations provide a bridge between seniors in need and the resources available to them.
Rebuilding Together of Washington, D.C., provides free home repairs for low-income elderly, disabled homeowners, and families with children, assuring that homeowners can live with safety, warmth, and independence. 80 percent of those aged 50 and older own their own homes, and 92 percent want to age in place. In response to the dire need for proper housing, Rebuilding Together has rehabilitated over 2,700 homes in the last 27 years with the help of tens of thousands of volunteers.
We Are Family D.C. is an outreach and advocacy network started by seniors and their friends that brings support, advice, and a kind ear to those who may feel overwhelmed or lonely. Among other things, the "We Are Family" network provides advocacy with landlords and government agencies, a free monthly grocery delivery service, and transportation to stores and appointments. The organization seeks to build community, nourishing friendships across boundaries like race, age, class, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation. All services are provided at no cost to the seniors that We Are Family serves.
