Rape, sexual assault, and abuse are traumatic and tragic for their victims, and victims’ loved ones. Though it may not always be talked about, one in six women have reported being raped or sexually assaulted, and there were 248,300 reported attacks in 2007. Being a victim of such an attack can have long-term psychological and physical repercussions, with significantly raised instances of depression, suicide attempts, drug or alcohol abuse, and eating disorders. Psychological and physical treatment is often necessary. However, only 40% of attacks are reported, many survivors do not know where to turn for help, and as a result, and many victims do not get the help they need.
The DC Rape Crisis Center (DCRCC) is a major resource in the DC area for victims and their families. Their Crisis Hotline (202.333.RAPE) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for anonymous support and information from a trained counselor. They offer counseling for both adults and children, educational outreach to the community, and advocacy efforts. DCRCC will also send trained volunteers to accompany victims to the hospital, police station, or court, 24 hours a day.
The Victim Assistance and Sexual Assault Program (VASAP) serves Montgomery County citizens who are victims of violence and assault. Free counseling and referrals are available by phone or in person 24 hours a day. VASAP provides psychiatric treatment, group and individual counseling, support for victims and their families, and 24-hour outreach counseling at police stations and hospitals.
The City of Alexandria’s Sexual Assault Response and Awareness (SARA) Program offers 24-hour support and counseling; free Rape Aggression Defense classes; support groups for victims of adult and childhood assault or abuse; advocacy with medical, police, and court systems; and prevention and risk reduction.
