Organizations help give job seekers important skills

The current job market is challenging, but it’s even more difficult for those who are unemployed or underemployed. Without the necessary skills and education, many people are at a disadvantage in the hiring process. Several local organizations are helping workers obtain job training and essential workplace skills.

Computer C.O.R.E., in Alexandria, Va., offers low-cost computer training to low-income residents of northern Virginia. The classes teach basic computer skills, offer help with resume preparation, and give program graduates free refurbished computers to further their skills and education. Professionals and businesses can help the program by donating office supplies, flash drives and used computers, and by hiring Computer C.O.R.E. graduates. Volunteers are needed to teach classes, tutor and mentor students, conduct mock interviews, and recondition computers.

The Opportunities Industrialization Center of Washington, D.C. (OIC) is a comprehensive employment and training program that has successfully placed hundreds of graduates in full-time jobs. OIC provides literacy, occupational skills training, job readiness, placement services, and case-management services to D.C. residents. OIC is a licensed educational institution offering specialized training and nationally recognized certifications in computer programs, computer repair, hospitality customer service, construction, and other areas. There are multiple training sites in southeast D.C.

The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation offers One-Stop Career Centers in every county, including Prince George’s and Montgomery.

MontgomeryWorks Career Center offers career exploration assistance, referrals to training programs, placement services, resume preparation assistance, workshops to enhance job seeking skills and work readiness. It also provides access to computers with Internet access, printers, copiers, fax machines, telephones and a variety of job search resource materials.

Prince George’s One-Stop Career Center has resource areas with job search materials and computers with Internet access. The center offers free faxing, photocopying and telephone service for job searches as well as resume writing assistance and workshops to assist in job placement.
