Local organizations helping women cope with breast cancer

The Tigerlily Foundation, based in Virginia, was founded by a breast cancer survivor to help other young women going through the treatment process and raise awareness, by both meeting their daily needs and also providing support and care. The Chemo Buddy program pairs a volunteer with a patient while they go to chemotherapy to stay with them, drive them home, and if necessary, help prepare a meal or run errands. Other programs include the Fearless Female and A Day of Beauty, which aim to pamper and boost the morale of patients and survivors; Project Liberia, Funds for Families, and Tigerlily Mammogram Program, which raise money to help bring free mammograms to women both in Liberia and here in the United States, and help families with the financial struggles associated with breast cancer; and At Home, which brings meals to women who are undergoing treatment.

Nueva Vida is the first organization to provide support for Spanish-speaking women in the D.C. area who have been diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer. They offer general support groups, in addition to ones specifically for stress-reduction and for women in treatment. Nueva Vida also has individual counseling, peer support, a resource and outreach center, and advocacy efforts. They also are closely linked with a number of research organizations and journals, which influence their programs and community outreach while also providing a Latina voice to many leadership boards.

The Capital Breast Care Center helps women with the medical side of breast cancer treatment, by providing patients with resources and information, mammograms, and treatment, regardless of their ability to pay. They also help women by providing counseling, pairing them with a Navigator to help them through the process of treatment, and work for advocacy.
