Response To Fred Fiske's Commentary: Hiring Ex-Offenders
Last week during this program, WAMU commentator Fred Fiske talked about the challenge of finding a job for individuals with criminal records -- and its impact on unemployment.
More than 80 percent of employers check for a criminal record before considering hiring an individual. And about 1 in 4 adults today has a record of at least one arrest. Fiske highlighted the assumption that a criminal record signals higher odds that the individual will commit crimes in the future. But commentator Thom Feucht, executive senior science advisor at the National Institute of Justice says prior arrests aren't necessarily as predictive as you might expect.
