Under his tenure, the station's cume audience has increased by 62 percent[1], and it has become one of the top five most listened-to[2] public radio stations in the United States, in the 8th largest market, and the second most listened-to radio station in the nation's capital.[3]
He spent 14 years in BBC TV and Radio News and worked throughout Europe and North and South America. As managing editor for WNYC Radio in New York City, Mark led the news team, which won an Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Journalism and a duPont Columbia Award for an investigative series. Working with media partners both at WAMU 88.5 and at American University's School of Communication, Mark conceives and strives to support, nurture, and mentor new multi-media content proposals with financially sustainable strategies for editorial innovation and multi-platform distribution.
Mark has led large production and broadcast units and their staffs through change cycles, and has experience in communications, branding, human resource management, strategic and financial planning, and audience research analytics.
He has overseen the expansion of output to include two additional HD Radio channels and accompanying web streams, specializing in international news and traditional American music respectively. He also stewarded the development of local news and public affairs coverage, the expansion of live continuity, and the launch of new foreign affairs, arts, and environmental content. Mark also teaches multi-media management, writing, and audio and video skills to undergraduates and graduate students at American University’s School of Communication.
