WAMU 88.5 News has been honored with two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) for outstanding achievements in electronic journalism.
WAMU 88.5’s education reporter Kavitha Cardoza captured regional Murrow Award in the Hard News category for her story on how a multimillion-dollar budget shortfall affected summer school programs, youth employment efforts, and other enrichment activities for young people in the District.
District reporter Patrick Madden won in the Audio Investigative Reporting category for his series that found evidence of nepotism within the administration of D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and followed the subsequent investigation into the administration's hiring practices.
“WAMU 88.5 is tremendously proud of Kavitha and Patrick, two talented and dedicated journalists who are dogged in their approach to covering local news. These awards are not only a testament to their skill but also indicative of the great advancements WAMU 88.5 News continues to achieve,” said Mark McDonald, WAMU 88.5 programming director.
The awards will be presented at the Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association convention in Ocean City, Md., in June. Regional winners move on to the national awards competition, which will be judged in June.
