Diane Rehm named to Washingtonian’s list of “100 Most Powerful Women”

Diane Rehm, host of WAMU 88.5 and NPR’s The Diane Rehm Show, has been named one of “100 Most Powerful Women” by Washingtonian magazine.

Compiled by magazine editors, the list recognizes women leaders from the public, private and nonprofit sectors. In addition to Rehm, the 2011 list includes First Lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Supreme Court justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, among others.

“It is quite an honor to be included among these distinguished women who influence every sphere of life,” said Rehm. “I am grateful to Washingtonian for choosing me to receive this kind recognition.”

Washingtonian’s “100 Most Powerful Women” list appears in the magazine’s October issue.

Diane Rehm is a native Washingtonian who began her radio career in 1973 as a volunteer for WAMU 88.5. In 1979, she was selected to host WAMU 88.5’s local morning talk show, Kaleidoscope, which was renamed The Diane Rehm Show in 1984. The Diane Rehm Show has grown from a local morning talk show to a public broadcasting powerhouse. Syndicated to more than 160 NPR member stations and more than 70 HD Radio channels nationwide, and heard by overseas listeners through NPR Worldwide, the Armed Forces Network, and Sirius XM Radio, Diane now reaches an audience of more than 2.3 million listeners weekly. In 2010, she was awarded the prestigious Peabody award.
