Celebrating 50 Years

Since first signing on from the campus of American University on October 23, 1961, WAMU 88.5 has worked to provide a marketplace for ideas and thoughtful dialogue -- a place for civil discussion of public affairs that is within reach of all the citizens of our community. We have done so in fulfillment of the best ideals of the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967.

Building on a 50-year record of success and integrity, WAMU 88.5 now is the leading public radio station in our nation's capital, serving nearly 800,000 listeners each week in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The station has charted a path of tremendous growth and takes a leadership role in our region's civil discussion of issues of critical importance.

Over our 50-year history, WAMU has launched the careers of some of public radio's brightest lights, including NPR's Susan Stamberg and WAMU's Peabody Award-winning Diane Rehm. The station has hosted presidents, heads of state, Hollywood luminaries, lawmakers, pundits, and best-selling authors. Over the years, everyone from Julia Child to Paula Deen, from Kirk Douglas to Cate Blanchett, and from John McCain to Hillary Clinton has stepped into our studios in northwest Washington.

We hope to celebrate this milestone anniversary with you, our listeners and online users, throughout 2011. Kicking off on Dec. 31, 2010, with A Hot Jazz New Year's Eve and concluding with a gala celebration Oct. 29, 2011 at the National Building Museum, we plan to offer several fantastic opportunities to come together with us and toast not only the past 50 years, but also the many years of great radio to come!
