Virginia may well be the future home of an NBA franchise. A new study commissioned for the Virginia Beach Development Authority claims the commonwealth could support a team.
Officials are considering whether to build an 18,000 square foot facility in hopes of luring an NBA or NHL team to town. If built, a team could begin playing in the state by 2015.
City officials say they need to move fast on a decision to develop the $350 million arena because of competition from other cities also wanting to host a team. Seattle has already agreed to a funding plan to build a $490 million arena in an effort to court back an NBA team, for instance.
With that in mind, construction would have to begin in May 2013.
The study also revealed Philadelphia-based Comcast-Spectacor reports an NBA franchise is considering the possibility of relocating to Virginia Beach, but so far no one is saying which franchise it might be.
