Capital Bikeshare has 175 stations around the D.C. region.

Capital Bikeshare has more members who use the service as a part of their everyday lives than any other bike share system in the country, according to a report released by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The District's bike share system allows customers to pick up a bike at any of its 175 stations and use it for commuting, errands or anything else. In just four years the number of year-round users has grown to over 19,000.

Monica Hernandez, a spokesperson for the D.C. Department of Transportation, says the program's success is largely due to strategic planning.

"The ease of using the system and the accessibility have been the key elements behind the high numbers of membership," she says.

She also points to the Bikeshare's growth.

"It has a lot to do with the fact that we've been able to continue to expand the system," she says. "Not only in the District, but now we have stations located in Alexandria."

While Capital Bikeshare came in first for year-round members, Miami Beach's bike share system had over 3 times as many short-term users.
