Falsified Grant Documents Prompt Fairfax To Return Federal Money

The school system in Virginia's Fairfax County is repaying the federal government $1 million after an investigation found that some grant documents had been falsified.

Fairfax schools applied for the grant back in 2000 to help pay for a career-awareness program for at-risk students at Glasgow Middle School. The U.S. Department of Education awarded the system $2.7 million to be given out over five years.

But a Fairfax schools spokesman says that in 2004, an audit by the school system found the initial grant application included forged signatures and other falsified documents. The system suspended use of the money it had already received and alerted the Education Department about the issue.

The Washington Post reports the employee responsible for the falsifications left the system in 2003 and says after an internal investigation, Fairfax schools amended the application procedures for grants to include more oversight.
