The National Cathedral has a new dean, after Reverend Gary Hall was appointed Tuesday.

A minister from Michigan who was active in the civil rights movement in the 1960s has been selected to serve as dean of the Washington National Cathedral.

Reverend Gary Hall will take over the second-highest post at the cathedral. Officials say Hall has the right background to take on the cathedral's missions and raise its profile. The National Cathedral has faced several challenges in recent years including severe budget cuts and last year's damaging earthquake.

Hall is a rector at Christ Church Cranbrook and chaplain of the Cranbook upper school in Bloomfield, Mich. He's taught English at University of California, Los Angeles, and served as dean of the Seabury-Western Theological seminary in Evanston, Ill.

Hall believes there is no place in America or in the Episcopal Church like the National Cathedral, he said in an interview Tuesday.

"It has a unique role in our national life, it has a unique role in our denomination, and it is the public face of the Episcopal church of the 21st century," Hall said.

Hall would be the 10th dean of the cathedral. His nomination must be approved by the cathedral's governing board, as well as the foundation that oversees several city Episcopal institutions.

It's Boom Times For Pop-Up Shops As Mobile Shopping Clicks

One-click online shopping is changing how we shop. Stores with leases as short as a day are proliferating — meaning a storefront can be a designer clothing store one day and a test kitchen the next.
